Riekes Center Embarks on Major Roof Repair and Facility Upgrade

Menlo Park, CA, May 13, 2024 – The Riekes Center for Human Enhancement is thrilled to announce the commencement of a significant roof repair and facility enhancement project, set to begin on Monday, May 20th, 2024. This initiative will pave the way for future improvements to our facility, which promise an enhanced experience for our participants and the community at large.

The construction, which kicks off with phase one on the north end of the building, will necessitate temporary closures of a few areas to ensure the safety and efficiency of the project. These areas include the front parking lot, basketball court, turf area, cardio area, and lower body area. To lessen any inconvenience to our valued participants, we will be relocating fitness equipment from these zones to the south end of our building for daily use until this phase of the project is complete. Programs will continue as scheduled. The archery section will be temporarily closed to accommodate fitness equipment.

Our front desk operations will be relocated as part of this temporary adjustment. The entrance to the Riekes Center will shift to the south side of the building, accessible from the staff parking lot. We understand the importance of clear communication during this transition and will provide ample signage to guide visitors to the new temporary entrance.

Phase one of the project is scheduled to be completed by June 7th. Subsequent phases will see further enhancements, with the warehouse and staff parking lot earmarked for closure during later stages of construction. Rest assured, we will keep our participants and the community informed with timely updates as we progress through these exciting changes.

As noted in a recent meeting with Mark Newton, Executive Director of the Riekes Center, “This renovation represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the Riekes Center. Not only will it address critical infrastructure needs, but it will also provide us with an opportunity to reimagine our space and services, ultimately delivering ever-more dynamic and engaging experiences for our community.”

The Riekes Center extends its heartfelt gratitude to its participants, supporters, and the community for their patience and understanding during this period of transformation. Together, we look forward to unveiling a revitalized facility that will continue to empower individuals to explore their potential and pursue their goals and passions.

Successful Two-Part Film Event: Riekes Community Showcases Emerging Talent in Bay Area Filmmaking

On Sunday, February 4th, the Riekes Center hosted a two-part film event at The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park. This event began with student films from our 2023 Summer Documentary Film Program and transitioned into our 2nd Annual Spotlight Short Film Showcase which highlighted up-and-coming Bay Area filmmakers.

The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park served as the vibrant backdrop for the debut of nine compelling films produced by students who participated in the 2023 Summer Documentary Program. These high school and middle school students spent three weeks over the summer learning from local filmmakers, researching topics they were passionate about, and working together to create beautiful documentaries that were straight from their hearts.  Enthusiastic friends, family, and members of the Riekes community came together to show their support for the budding talents.

The event encountered an unexpected twist when a power outage due to severe weather temporarily disrupted proceedings during the screening. Despite the setback, attendees demonstrated remarkable patience as the technical team resolved the issue. The interruption provided an unexpected opportunity for additional viewers who joined us for the Spotlight Films to appreciate the students' creative endeavors.

Following the student films, the Spotlight Short Film Showcase kicked off with a short film by two Riekes Center Staff and continued with short films that celebrated the diverse perspectives and talents of local Bay Area filmmakers. The event was made even more special by the presence of many of the filmmakers themselves, who joined the audience in experiencing the magic of cinema.

The Riekes Center extends heartfelt appreciation to the Guild Theatre for its invaluable support in hosting the event. Additionally, the organization expresses gratitude to The Little Giant Lighting & Grip Co. for its generous sponsorship of the Spotlight Short Film Festival, which played a crucial role in making the showcase a resounding success.

As the curtains closed on the day's festivities, the Riekes Center reflects on a truly memorable event that not only celebrated the art of filmmaking but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among Bay Area creatives. With the success of this year's event, anticipation builds for future endeavors that will continue to showcase and support emerging talent in the vibrant landscape of Bay Area filmmaking.
