Julio Deras

VISUAL ARTS MANAGER, FILMMAKING

Julio started working at the Riekes Center in early 2019. Beginning his journey at The Riekes Center as a Film Instructor. Julio soon started leading our Filmmaking program. Under his direction, the Film program expanded to included a CAC Documentary film program and a film festival - which is in its 3rd year.

Currently Julio manages the Visual Arts and professional services that the Center offers to contractors such as Synapse School, Everest School, Cal-Hi, San Mateo voting Center and many others. Additionally, he instructs in our Filmmaking and Editing programs. His leadership and care for other members of the Creative Arts department help us maintain an inclusive and non-judgement environment, allowing everyone to participate in our programs regardless of their ability to pay or perform.

Alongside his work at the Riekes Center, Julio is currently getting his MFA in Cinema at San Francisco State University School, where he is also a Teaching Associate. Julio’s films are multifaceted, working in both Narrative and Documentary formats. He specializes in Cinematography and Screenwriting, and his style is heavily influenced by Expressionism and New German Cinema.
