Adaptive Sports and Fitness

The Riekes Center is committed to maintaining an inclusive and diverse environment, where students of all ability levels are welcome and treated equally. We customize a workout plan for each student and adapt our training equipment to your individual needs, whether you are a beginner or an elite athlete. We offer several programs specifically for individuals with a disability, including Archery, Strength and Conditioning, Tai Chi/Qi Gong, Wheelchair Rugby and Personal Training. In addition, the Riekes Center periodically hosts clinics in Paralympic Sports such as Sitting Volleyball, Goal Ball, Fencing, Wheelchair Basketball, Table Tennis and Wheelchair Lacrosse.

Partnership with VA Palo Alto and Menlo Park

Our strong partnership with the Veterans Administration Divisions in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Livermore and San Jose allows us to help veterans achieve their goals in Athletic Fitness, Creative Arts and Nature Awareness.  Veterans currently attend regular weekly programs in Strength and Conditioning, Archery, the National MOVE Program (Motivating Overweight Vets Everywhere) and Wheelchair Rugby.  Veterans also participate in Creative Arts programs such as photography and drum circles, as well as Nature Awareness programs such as drum making, animal tracking and gardening.

Paralympic Sport Club Menlo Park

The US Olympic Committee designated the Riekes Center as a Paralympic Sport Club in early 2011 after a rigorous and competitive application process.

The primary objectives of Paralympic Sport Clubs include:

  • To develop community-based sports clubs that recruit and involve youth and adults with physical and visual disabilities in sports and physical activity regardless of their ability to perform.
  • To develop a comprehensive Paralympic Sport Club network as a foundation for a Paralympic athlete pipeline.
  • To provide community-based opportunities for injured service members to continue sport participation upon their release from Military Treatment Facilities (MTF).
  •  To create a national, unified Paralympic Sport Club network that provides a “grass-roots” awareness campaign to educate America on the opportunities and benefits inherent in sport and physical activity as practiced by persons with physical and visual disabilities

The designation of “Paralympic Sport Club Menlo Park” gives the Riekes Center greater opportunities to host clinics, competitions and programs for athletes with a disability, including veterans. It helps us to identify and train future Paralympians, and it also provides more funding opportunities through the US Olympic Committee.
